Brian Schneider Is Home Town Hero

Well, he’s home town if you consider Allentown on the outer fringe of Philadelphia.

Go an hour up 309, and you’ll come to Northampton, PA, Schneider’s home town, which makes him, in effect, a Philly boy.

Last night was a night of highs and lows for Schneider, the low being losing track of the wild pitch, then having no one to throw to for the out at home plate.

And the high? His walk off home run, naturally, his team happily waiting to mug him as he approached home plate.

(And just what was Shane Victorino doing with that bat anyhow?)

Brian Schneider looks a bit like Robin Williams’ Popeye when he stands at the plate, his cheek bulging with tobacco.

But last night, he looked like Popeye after the fella downed a whole carton of spinach. Last night, Brian Schneider looked like a true home town hero as he sent the game winning ball into the crowd.

By the way, Brian has a dog called Ribbie. Nice touch, that.

Phillies on the Hunt for Third Base and Bench

While the Phillies management are looking for third base and bench players, Chan Ho Park has not been brought back – although Ruben Amaro says they would like to bring back both Park and Eyre for the 2010 season.

Both pitchers did well in the Phillies bullpen. Park was sometimes downright amazing, and made many wonder if he were potential closer material.

As for Carlos Ruiz, he remains numero uno behind the plate. Brian Schneider – who grew up near Allentown, PA – has been signed to catch back up to Ruiz. It’s a nice story: Brian, an all-his-life-Phillies-fan now plays for the team he loves. You gotta like that.

And that the Mets let him go? May they live to heartily regret it.
